In recent years, social robotics has generated a variety of product concepts and several robots started being sold on the consumer market. Still, questions regarding the long-term adoption and commercial prospects of social robots alongside other IoT and smart technologies linger. This workshop seeks to discuss how to address challenges to the broader consumer-oriented development of social robots by finding meaningful ways to use the rich modalities unique to social robots in creative content creation.

Content in the form of apps has been the driving force in the success of smartphones. Similarly, in the gaming world, content dictates the adoption of gaming platforms. In this full-day workshop, we will focus on creative content generation in the domain of social robotics, and the development of social robot apps that not only enhance functionality but also offer more engaging and entertaining interactive applications.

This workshop provides a venue for researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including art, design, social science, robotics, and media studies among others, to share and develop holistic and creative approaches to the development of social robotics creative content and applications. These can include apps for the robots themselves, but also connections between robots and smartphone and computer apps, and emerging blends of robotics and virtual and augmented reality. We are also interested in discussing the potential and challenges for content generation in specific applications of social robotics, such as education, entertainment, and healthcare, among others.

We invite you to submit short papers describing work in progress or containing preliminary results to discuss with the community. Submissions may include but are not limited to the following topics:

  • Designing Expressive Actuation and Content for Robots
  • Multimedia Content for Human-Robot Interaction
  • Social Robots in Social Media
  • Game AI in Social Robotics
  • Human-Robot Creative Collaboration
  • Synchronization of Expressive Content for Social Robot Interaction
  • Robots in Education, Entertainment and Healthcare
  • Art in Human Robot Interaction

Submission Details

Submissions should be 2-4 pages long. They must be submitted in PDF format and conform to ACM SIG Proceedings specifications. Please note that we are following the general ACM SIG format, not the SIGCHI format. Authors should use the sample-sigconf.tex or interim_layout.docx template files. In addition, the ACM has partnered with Overleaf, where authors can start writing using this link directly.

Papers should be submitted by January 31, 2020 for timely consideration. The submissions should be uploaded at the workshop’s EasyChair site: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=hri2020wscreativesr

We explicitly encourage the submission of papers describing work in progress or containing preliminary results to discuss with the community.

Papers will be reviewed by the workshop committee with consideration for quality and fit to the workshop. At least one author of each accepted submission is required to attend the workshop. Accepted papers will be presented either as a poster or short oral presentation, and will be archived on the workshop website.
